Johnny Gallagher - A 2020 Vision

🇫🇷 N’est pas Gallagher qui veut ! Car on aura vite fait de vous comparer au génie mélodique de certains (Noel Gallagher) ou à la magnificence technique d’autres (Rory Gallagher). Et si en plus vous êtes vous-même guitariste, bluesman et irlandais alors plus aucune espèce de complaisance n’est permise ! Mais de tout cela, le placide Johnny Gallagher n’a que faire car sa musique parle pour lui, et plutôt deux fois qu’une à l’image de cette production regroupant la crème de ses enregistrements depuis son premier album paru en 1997 !

Cette tranquille assurance de Johnny Gallagher est tout sauf feinte car, comme le dit si bien la formule, « la musique, il est tombé dedans dès son plus jeune âge ». Sa mère coiffeuse composait de la musique à ses heures perdues alors que son père, son idole absolue, avait fondé en 1959 avec son frère un groupe qui connut son heure de gloire en Irlande. Voilà pour le cadre, les fondations d’une construction aujourd’hui solidement ancrée. D’abord attiré par la batterie (dès 9 ans dans la fanfare locale de Bundoran dans le comté de Donegal), il ira même jusqu’à intégrer le groupe de son père avec qu’il tournera même aux USA à l’aune de ses 12 ans. Ce qui ne l’empêchera pas d’étudier en même temps la mandoline, le banjo, sans oublier le violon et le violoncelle en amateur insatiable de musique classique qu’il était ! Tout cela bien avant la guitare (et la basse) dont il est aujourd’hui une référence indiscutable ! Et le chant que sa timidité naturelle a longtemps érigé en forteresse imprenable !

🇺🇸 Being Gallagher is no easy feat! Because you'll quickly find yourself compared to the melodic genius of some (Noel Gallagher) or the technical magnificence of others (Rory Gallagher). And if, on top of that, you're a guitarist, a bluesman, and Irish, then there's no room for complacency! But Johnny Gallagher, the placid musician, couldn't care less because his music speaks for itself, not just once but twice, as exemplified by this compilation gathering the cream of his recordings since his first album in 1997!

Johnny Gallagher's calm assurance is anything but pretense because, as the saying goes, "he fell into music from a young age." His mother, a hairdresser, composed music in her spare time, while his father, his absolute idol, co-founded a band in 1959 with his brother that experienced glory in Ireland. That sets the stage, the foundations of a construction now firmly rooted. Initially drawn to the drums (at the age of 9 in the local band in Bundoran in County Donegal), he even joined his father's band and toured the USA at the age of 12. This didn't prevent him from simultaneously studying the mandolin, banjo, not to mention the violin and cello, as an insatiable amateur of classical music! All of this well before the guitar (and bass), of which he is now an indisputable reference! And singing, which his natural shyness long turned into an impregnable fortress!
